The homeowner came out twice. She talked to me both times. I think she felt bad for me. I must have really needed this free bed. She never offered me a screwdriver. It would have help this whole thing go so much faster if she did. Her husband finally came over with one. I think they just wanted me off of their property. Maybe taking over a half hour to pick up "free" stuff is a bit creepy.
I didn't think to take even one photo of it in its "free" state. Here she is back at the house.
Did I say the bed was literally falling apart? All of the spindles were loose and needed to be re-glued. The original paint job was hardly wonderful but was going to have to do, given that my niece was currently sleeping on the floor. I removed the metal parts and scrubbed them with fine steel wool. I always intended to rush this project and take shortcuts. I skipped a lot of steps. I did sand off whatever was chipping and followed with a fine grit sanding block to smooth out the surface. A layer of walnut stain followed and then a coat of wax to finish it off. Nothing fancy.
It's now hanging out in my niece's room. She shopped for new bedroom décor over the weekend to accommodate her new bed.
