I love armories! I'd have one everywhere if I could. I love to see them housing bathroom towels and other essentials! I've always admired those prissy-fru-fru, chic-n-shabby, cottage style ones and made it my mission to thriftily acquire one for my girl's nursery. One that would totally say "Oh yeah, Oh yeah, princess lives here"! I found what I like at Posh Tots and Layla Grace but about choked on their sticker price! None under a few grand!
So when I found this old Magnavox entertainment center at a thrift shop for $18.99 and I had a $5 off coupon (yep, $14 BUCKS!), I about fell over! This salvaged beauty had the look and the lines that I was look for. Awesome!! I was sooo done looking! It came in two pieces. Heavy, but easy to move. Nothing was missing or broken. In fact, it still had the stereo, record player and 8-track inside. Just to satisfy my curiosity, I asked about the low price. The manager said that heavy pieces are hard to sell. I have to say, this was probably the most difficult project I've ever done! Gutting this pieces was almost not worth it. I spent crazy hours busting out the speaker boxes, which were stuck with some tar-like epoxy. It really didn't help that I was overly eager to begin this project and started without the proper tools. I gutted most of it with a flathead screwdriver, a kitchen knife, a hammer and my feet!
Though it looks to be a nice cream color, it really wasn't. It has an odd yellow ting and looked dated. I primed it, and painted it antique white (for this and all future nursery furniture).
I covered the speaker holes from the inside with scrap wood cut to size. Dummy panels with fabric, similar to the doors cover the holes on the outside. I lined the inside chicken wire with leftover clearance fabric from a previous project. Gotta LOVE free!

Great job! Love that you kicked in the panels! That sounds like me, run out of patience, and use whatever took is within reach first, even my foot! Happy 4th. -K
